SAN FRANCISCO, CA, May 17, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) –
Yammer, Inc., the leading provider of Enterprise Social Networks,
today announced it was named a Leader in Activities Streams by
Forrester Research Inc., in a new May 2012 report: “The Forrester
Wave(TM): Activities Streams, Q2 2012.” Yammer received the highest
scores for its current offering and was ranked among the highest
scores in 16 out of 19 criteria, including adoption strategy and
market presence with more than 5 million users.

According to Forrester, vendors in the Leader category have a strong
current offering, proven strategic intent and significant market
presence.

“Social activities streams are a bridge to enterprise social vision,”
wrote Rob Koplowitz, vice president and principal analyst, Forrester
Research. “They connect workers to each other and to information. On
its own, the information workplace lacks a mechanism that pulls
together events, along with their context, background, and required
actors, in a manner that is attractive and easily consumable for
knowledge workers. This is where the activities stream comes in.

“In a well-designed information workplace, this stream can be placed
anywhere (e.g., employee portal, email, or packaged business
application), allowing an employee complete freedom in where and how
they work,” continued Koplowitz.

“We believe this evaluation from Forrester further underscores
Yammer’s market leadership and builds on our significant momentum,”
said David Sacks, founder and CEO, Yammer. “Enterprise Social
Networking has gained mainstream acceptance, and companies are truly
beginning to see the tangible benefits of transformation in their
organizations. Yammer is changing the way companies communicate and
collaborate and ultimately get work done.”

Leading companies across industries use Yammer to drive company-wide
collaboration — uniting teams, empowering mobile workers and giving
executives unprecedented visibility into their organizations. Through
Yammer, employees across geographies and departments can share and
discover information, content and ideas, rapidly get questions
answered and collaborate more effectively on team projects.

Yammer integrates with a broad range of business applications such as
Microsoft Dynamics, Microsoft SharePoint, Salesforce.com and SAP,
making it easier for workers to discover, share and act on relevant
information within those systems to move business objectives forward.
Offering access points from mobile devices, web browsers, desktops
and within other business software, Yammer has the flexibility to
deliver social functionality wherever employees are working.

Sue

Dear Sue: First of all, I think that bare legs are vastly overrated. Dont listen to the fashion tribe. Listen to common sense. Listen to me. After all, if hosiery is good enough for Queen-of-England-to-be Kate Middleton, its good enough for the rest of us.

Furthermore, Kate wears nude hosiery which many fashion experts hold up to special ridicule. I think it looks great as long as its sheer and matches your flesh tones.

I just read in Britains Daily Mail that sales of nude hose once the preserve of grannies and frumps are soaring thanks to trendsetter Kate. At the giant UK grocery store chain Asda, sales of the George house brand of nude hosiery are up 500 percent!

As for leg makeup, I say use it as a last resort. My friend, Kit, who has prominent pale patches on her legs where there is no pigment, has tried many alternatives and had the best results with Dermablend, which has a huge color range. Kit uses Dermablend Smooth Indulgence foundation ($30) followed by Dermablend setting powder ($23), available online (dermablend.com) and at Ulta, Macys and elsewhere. Kit finds that it covers pretty well, doesnt smear much on clothes and stays on OK in a quick shower.

Another alternative for a special occasion is a sunless airbrush tan. But for best results plan ahead. You shouldnt shower for eight hours after treatment. And remember that the tan looks better on day two and fades gradually over a week or so. To find a place, search for spray on tan and your town.

Dear Answer Angel: Is it my imagination or are womens trouser socks meant to be worn only four or five times before developing holes near the toe? Since I dont wish to while away the hours darning socks, are there some brands out there that toe the line (pardon the pun)? Ive tried quite a few. Thanks!

MM

Dear MM: Speaking of the George hosiery brand I mention in the answer to Sue above, I love their trouser socks which Ive found really hold up for many, many wearings and machine washings. And, heres the great news: You can buy the brand at Wal-Mart. A five-pack costs just $5.97. My only caution is dont buy one-color multipacks with five different patterns or textures (stripes, herringbone etc.) You will never ever find the mates. Stick with no-pattern solids.

Dear Answer Angel: Just double checking. Is it OK to wear a black skirt in spring and summer? Also, what color hose goes with a black knee-length skirt?

Linda

Dear Linda: I would be in terrible trouble if a black skirt were a spring/summer no. Its my uniform and it is a total yes year round. A sheer light, pearl gray is a good hosiery color choice since black sheer looks too hot to me in the summer. But always sheer and do not show your toes if youre wearing hose.

Dear Answer Angel: Can I buy from Goodwill digitally, without having to paw through old prom dresses and such?

Margaret Ann

Dear Margaret Ann: I love pawing through old prom dresses and everything else that Goodwill has to offer. I once found a pair of Manolo Blahnik pumps in navy suede for $6.99 and practically danced out of the store.

But back to your question about digital. Shopgoodwill.com is the first Internet auction site created, owned and operated by a nonprofit organization. Theres a Hot 50 Items auction section that has an elite selection from participating Goodwills across the country. I saw offerings ranging from a 2005 Volvo to a Christian Dior wedding gown. But for me, nothing beats thrill-of-the-hunt hands-on thrifting.

Dear Answer Angel: Ive always been wary of shopping online for stuff you can theoretically buy at the corner store. Whats your advice?

LKK

Dear LKK: As I said to Margaret Ann (above) nothing beats hands-on shopping. Except when youre wasting time looking for boring stuff that should be on store shelves but isnt. I cant tell you how much time I spent looking for Brachs cinnamon disc candy that used to be available at every grocery and drugstore. What happened to it? Then the light bulb went on. A quick Internet search solved my problem. Same goes for Calvin Klein bras I used to buy at Macys. Now, they always seem to be out of the size or color I want. So, just yesterday I bought two from zappos.com. They were at my front door 36 hours later. My best advice is to always look for free shipping. Many online retailers try to gouge you there. Shopping online for routine purchases is liberating. And it leaves you more time to browse in stores for the fun stuff.

Dear Answer Angel: Whats with tops/shirts lately? Cant find a single one that Id want to wear. In my search, I have found the following: cut-out shoulders (ugh); one shoulder (double ugh); tops so colorful they look like flowers threw up on them; elasticized hemmed bottom as if I want to highlight my hips/bottom or have the thing ride up all day. Do you have any ideas on where to shop for tops?

Pat W.

Dear Pat: Totally agree. Other tops that people cant (or shouldnt) wear that abound in stores: see-through blouses and empire-waist items that look like maternity clothes. Who needs that? Ive had some luck at discounters like Marshalls and T. J. Maxx and for something a little dressier, I like Zara (zara.com).

Shop, drop, get help

Send your questions on style, shopping, beauty and makeup to answerangel@tribune.com.

Consider preparing an emergency supply kit for your pets in case of tornadoes or other severe weather. Here are tips from the National Weather Service on what to include:

– Food – keep at least 3 days of food in an airtight, waterproof container.
– Water – store at least 3 days of water specifically for your pets in addition to water you need for yourself and your family.
– Medicines and medical records – keep an extra supply of medicines your pet takes on a regular basis in a waterproof container.
– First aid kit – talk to your veterinarian about what is most appropriate for your pets emergency medical needs. Most kits should include colton bandage rolls, bandage tape and scissors; antibiotic ointment; flea and tick prevention; latex gloves, isopropyl alcohol and saline solution. Include a pet first aid reference book.
– Collar with ID tag, harness or leash – your pet should wear a collar with its rabies tag and identification at all times. Include a backup leash, collar and ID tag in your pet’s emergency supply kit. In addition, place copies of your pets registration information, adoption papers, vaccination documents and medical records in a clean plastic bag or waterproof container and also add them to your kit. You should also consider talking with your veterinarian about permanent identification such as microchipping and enrolling your pet in a recovery database.
– Crate or other pet carrier – if you need to evacuate in an emergency situation take your pets and animals with you provided that it is practical to do so. In many cases, your ability to do so will be aided by having a sturdy, safe, comfortable crate or carrier ready for transporting your pet. The carrier should be large enough for your pet to stand, turn around and lie down.
– Sanitation – include pet litter and litter box if appropriate, newspapers, paper towels, plastic trash bags and household chlorine bleach to provide for your pets sanitation needs. You can use bleach as a disinfectant (dilute nine parts water to one part bleach), or in an emergency you can also use it to purify water. Use 16 drops of regular household liquid bleach per gallon of water. Do not use scented or color safe bleaches, or those with added cleaners.
– A picture of you and your pet together – if you become separated from your pet during an emergency, a picture of you and your pet together will help you document ownership and allow others to assist you in identifying your pet. Include detailed information about species, breed, age, sex, color and distinguishing characteristics.
– Familiar items – include favorite toys, treats or bedding

For more information on preparing an emergency kit for your pets check: www.ready.gov/america/getakit/pets.html
This list is from the NWS.

National Dog Bite Prevention week is coming up. It’s May 20 through May 26. The United States Postal Service hopes two Texas cities Houston and San Antonio give that a lot of publicity.

Last year Houston was number one in the United States for dog attacks on postal workers. San Antonio was fifth. The Bayou City reported 62 attacks. The Alamo City had 39.

That brings up what I call the pit-bull-paradox. During the last month, two stories about pit bulls illustrate that paradox. A pit bull in New York took a bullet for its owner during an attempted home invasion. A pit bull in California sent a two-year old to the hospital.

Americans love pit bulls although studies show that the breed is one of the most likely to bite. Tiny dogs bite a lot too, according to a story in The New York Post. The paper reported that Chihuahuas and Shih Tzus ranked right along with pit bulls in the number of bites. But their tiny mouths do far less damage. Pit bulls cause major wounds and life-threatening injuries. Not surprisingly, the newspaper called the pit bull New York’s most vicious dog.

Childrens’ faces are often dog bite targets. That’s because kids and dogs are about the same height. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 800,000 Americans are treated every year for dog bites. Half are children. The CDC says dogs most frequently bite children between the ages of five and nine. Children younger than that are more likely to be bitten in the face. Boys are bitten more often than girls.

Parents of small children should take care around all dogs. An excited or fearful pet can bite a family member just as easily as a stranger.

Dog bites to the face cause puncture wounds and deep tears to skin on the cheeks and forehead. While reconstructive surgery can repair little faces, blindness can result if eyes are lacerated or torn from sockets. Scars can be minimized but deformity is always a possibility.

Websites of the US Postal Service, the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Centers for Disease Control have lots of information for parents and the general public about avoiding dog bites. But all agree on these important tips: No parent should ever let a child play with a dog unsupervised. No one should approach an unfamiliar dog, disturb a sleeping dog or a dog that is eating or caring for puppies.

We all love our dogs and our children. Exercise some care and they can live in harmony.

What should have been a jubilant victory celebration turned sour Tuesday for the Birmingham Marian girls soccer team.

The Mustangs won their pivotal Catholic League Central Division showdown 1-0 at Livonia Ladywood, but lost starting junior forward Hanna Beck Sawyer to what appeared to be serious knee injury with just over four minutes left in closely contested match which pitted the states top two ranked teams in Division 2.

Marian is now 12-1-1 overall and 9-0-1 in the Central Division, while Ladywood falls to 15-1-2 and 8-1-1.

Unfortunately Ive had too much experience and unfortunately its her ACL, Marian coach Barry Brodsky said of Beck Sawyers injury. It was gut-wrenching. Its just a very hollow victory when you lose a girl like that, whom Ive known since she was a little ninth-grader. You dont care about the game, but Im sorry.

The games lone goal came with 12:23 remaining in the first half when junior forward Katie White one-timed a cross off the foot of Annika Johnson that Ladywood goalkeeper Sara Even had no chance on.

Meanwhile, Ladywoods best scoring opportunity came early in the first half when Marian senior keeper Makenzie Larson robbed senior forward Kelly Capoccia from point-blank range on a sprawling save.

Theres no secret, Ladywood coach Ken Shingledecker said. They (Marian) want to get to the end line and serve balls in front of your goal. It was a great finish. We did the same thing early on and their keeper (Larson) came up huge on Kelly (Capoccia). They finished their chance, we didnt finish ours. Pretty even game other than that. Hopefully we can do it again a week from Saturday (in a possible Catholic League finals rematch) with them.

The two teams tied 1-1 on April 28 at Marian, a game where Ladywood had significantly more quality scoring chances.

In the rematch, the Blazers were missing one of their main offensive targets, junior forward Domenique Sarnecky, who is sidelined with a knee injury.

Doms usually a huge factor because we run a lot of stuff through her, Shingledecker said. When shes not in it changes the way we look. So not having her hurts, but obviously it cant be an excuse. We have a lot of good players who can play up there and get the job done. That (Marian) defense is excellent. I dont want to take anything away from their effort. They played a little bit harder than us.

They (Marian) were organized in the back and did a nice job. It is what it is. Weve got to move on.

The cost of checking Facebook when youre on your holidays is about to fall faster than a tourist looking the wrong way when they cross the road. The European Parliament has passed new regulations to limit phone and data roaming charges in the EU and the rest of the world.

Its the first time caps will be imposed on data roaming, so you wont be hit by a massive bill as soon as you get home and dump your suitcase just because you checked your email a few times. And you wont get a massive shock just because you used Google Maps when you couldnt find the hotel after that second bottle of el vino collapso.

On 1 July the cost of data will be capped at 56p per megabyte — just in time for the summer hols to kick off in earnest and for European tourists to land in Britain for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Even better, prices will fall over the next two years, to 36p next year and 16p in 2014. And in two years youll be able to choose a roaming deal from a different operator instead of being stuck with the network you use at home.

Call charges will also drop, to 25p from 28p this year, and to 19p over the next couple of years.

Holidaymakers and business travellers have had a raw deal for too long, with phone networks making out like bandits as they charge what they like. Our business-minded buddies at ZDNet revealed last year that the actual cost of providing data-roaming services is between 1p and 3p per megabyte — meaning some networks have hit us with mark-ups as high as 80,000 per cent. Thats more than double the mark-up on cocaine. So we hear. Ahem.

As welcome as this news is, the capped prices only apply to European citizens travelling within the EU. Journeying elsewhere for work or pleasure can still lead to hefty charges — but the £40 cap on your total bill thats currently in place when youre travelling in the EU has also been extended to trips to the rest of the world.

Is it about time someone sorted out roaming? Have you ever been hit with a shocking bill when you got back from your holibobs? Roam on down to the comments or take a trip to our Facebook page to let us know.

SINGAPORE – From next month, commuters taking cross-border taxis in Singapore and Malaysia will be able to board and alight anywhere on the domestic leg of the journey. This would mean, for example, that a commuter taking a Singapore cross-border taxi can board or alight anywhere in Singapore.

Currently, cross-border taxis are only allowed to pick up and drop off commuters at two designated terminals: Ban San Street terminal in Singapore and Pasar Bakti terminal in Johor Baru. However, commuters still need to board and alight at the designated terminals when they are not on the domestic leg.

The change was announced in a press statement issued after the ninth working meeting of the Malaysia-Singapore Joint Ministerial Committee (JMC) for Iskandar Malaysia yesterday.

To boost connectivity between Iskandar Malaysia and Singapore, Malaysias Land Public Transport Commission and Singapores Land Transport Authority have awarded a tender for the Malaysia-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) link joint engineering study to the consortium of AECOM Singapore, AECOM Perunding and SA Architects.

It will determine the technical parameters for the RTS Link between Singapore and Johor Baru to achieve a convenient and cost-effective system that is well-integrated with public-transport services on both sides.

This will be done in two phases. In Phase 1, which is expected to be completed by the end of this year, the consultant will look into technical parameters and propose options for the link.

The Malaysia-Singapore JMC for Iskandar Malaysia will decide on the option that will be studied further in the second phase.

The meeting was co-chaired by Mr Nor Mohamed Yakcop, Malaysias Minister in the Prime Ministers Department, and Mr Khaw Boon Wan, Singapores Minister for National Development. Also present were the Chief Minister of Johor, Mr Abdul Ghani Othman, and Singapores Minister for Transport, Mr Lui Tuck Yew.

One of my all-time favorite adult toys is the Plantraco Desktop Rover (I have the ‘pre-laser tag’ version, and sadly, they do not seem to sell this anymore. I liked it because it was a device I could play with on a desktop (hence the clever name) and imagine it being a Mars rover, or an alien scout vehicle, or whatever.

I was excited to try the Desk Pets Tankbot as a potential replacement that actually did more and cost less, and used my smartphone as the remote!

The $40 MSRP toy comes with the actual TankBot itself (available in 4 colors, each with its own frequency), a remote-control dongle for the earphone jack of your smartphone, and that’s about it. There are some instructions on the packaging, and some on-line if you need more assistance. The TankBot does amazingly well on the Gadgeteer Creak Test overall.
