27 Apr 12 [x+1] Makes Management Changes to Extend the Ecosystem Connections of Its …

New York, NY, April 20, 2012 –(PR.com)– [x+1], www.xplusone.com, today announced that as part of its focus on strengthening its business partner relations to extend the ecosystem connections of [x+1] Origin, its leading digital marketing hub, David Skinner has been named to the new position of Senior Vice President, Corporate Development.

Timothy Smith, who had been Chief Strategy Officer for social commerce pioneer Lemonade Inc., will take on Skinners former role as SVP, Client Solutions.

In his new position, Skinner will be representing [x+1]s company and brand to business partners, ensuring that its digital marketing hub is a valuable asset to major brand marketer and agency clients. This involves building and managing [x+1]s relationships throughout the digital ecosystem, including suppliers, integration partners and channel partners.

My vision is to make [x+1] function like a good app: ubiquitous and easy to work with, Skinner said. That allows our integrated marketing clients to concentrate more on lsquo;marketing and less on lsquo;integration.

Skinner said he will work with clients to make the silos that separate marketing channels and functions irrelevant for them. Marketers have become tired and frustrated with having to integrate multiple point solutions in order to run marketing campaigns across multiple screens and channels, he said. They are demanding a simple framework for bringing together targeting, data and measurement. To do this, you need both proprietary technology and an open integration framework using industry standard connections via APIs and web services. [x+1] delivers both via our digital marketing hub.

Smith will partner with [x+1]s Fortune 500 clients to help them determine how its marketing technology solutions will help them best meet their business growth objectives, and then optimize their marketing performance against those objectives.

At Lemonade, Smiths digital marketing experience helped bring the companys social commerce vision to life. His role included managing the product/application development process, implementing site operations and customer service, securing business partnerships to drive revenue growth and launching and managing the Lemonade Enterprise Solution. The latter helped grow successful social commerce networks within retail, travel, mobile and in the entertainment space for pop star Taylor Swift. Prior to Lemonade, Smith spent 12 years at Modem Media, now Publicis Modem, where he was a Senior Vice President and a co-lead on the companys marketing strategy practice.

I love being in a position to advance the evolution of leading-edge technology that drives consistent, measurable results and helps organizations gain a competitive edge, Smith said in describing what attracted him to [x+1].

Because we recognized the importance of managing partner and channel relationships, we decided it needed to be a full-time position, said [x+1] Chairman and CEO John Nardone. Im thrilled to have someone of Davids talent and experience taking on this important role at such a crucial juncture in the evolution of our company. At the same time, were able to make the transition relatively seamless as Tims background and expertise are a perfect match for the client solutions role. Its a real win-win for us.

25 Apr 12 County Connections: UCSD’s Frazier steals home on Jackie Robinson Day

pitcher Matt Montgomery threw the ball away on a pickoff attempt, allowing Frazier to go to third. He then scored on another passed ball. Fraziers final line for the game: 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs.

While with the Knights, Frazier earned Santa Cruz Coastal Athletic League first-team honors three times and was an all-county selection twice.

Fraziers Tritons [24-16] have won seven of their last eight games. They play a four-game series against Cal State San Bernardino starting today.

Heres how other former Santa Cruz County high school athletes fared last week at the collegiate level:

BASEBALL

Collin Ferguson, Saint Marys freshman infielder [Santa Cruz]: Went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs in a 5-3 win over Hawaii.

Kyle Anderson, Cal Poly senior pitcher [Aptos]: Improved to 6-1 with a win over Cal State Northridge. Struck out two while allowing one run over seven innings.

Brett Levy, UC San Diego freshman catcher [Scotts Valley]: Went 1-for-3 with two runs in a 15-6 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Chris Levy, UC Davis junior pitcher [Scotts Valley]: Threw two scoreless innings of relief in an 8-5 loss to Sacramento State.

SOFTBALL

Samantha Lipperd, Sonoma State junior pitcher [SLV]: Was named CCAA Pitcher of the Week for a third time this season and a fifth time in the last two seasons.

Last week, in a four-game slate against Cal State Stanislaus, Lipperd tossed four complete games, earned four wins, and allowed two runs over 29 innings for a 0.48 ERA. She surrendered just nine hits in 91 at-bats — a .099 batting average against — and allowed just one hit in Saturday nights game.

A year after setting Sonoma States single-season strikeout record with 324, Lipperd shattered her own record last weekend when she struck out 38 batters over four games for a total of 332 strikeouts on the season. That total gives her the most Ks in the nation in any division, three more than Massachusetts Sara Plourde.

Caitlin Moran, Northern State junior infielder [Santa Cruz native]: Continued her recent hot streak with another good week. Went 3-for-4 with three runs, two stolen bases and an RBI in an 11-8 win over Upper Iowa. Went 1-for-2 with a run, an RBI and a stolen base in a 3-0 win over Upper Iowa. Went 1-for-3 with a run and a stolen base against Winona State. Went 3-for-4 with three runs, an RBI and a stolen base in a 9-1 win over Bemidji State.

Breana Kostreba, Cal freshman outfielder [Aptos]: Hit a two-run homer in an 8-3 loss to Arizona.

Ashley Morello, Pomona-Pitzer freshman outfielder [Harbor]: Went 3-for-4 with a run in a 5-3 loss to La Verne.

Kate OBrien, Smith junior infielder [Santa Cruz]: Hit a two-run double in a 5-3 loss to Worcester Polytechnic.

MENS VOLLEYBALL

Brian Cook, Stanford sophomore outside hitter [Soquel]: Racked up 12 kills, five digs and eight block assists in a three-set sweep of UCLA. Hit nine kills with five digs and two aces in a sweep of UC Santa Barbara.

WOMENS TRACK AND FIELD

Elena Venable, Brown freshman [Santa Cruz]: Helped the 4×400 meters relay team take fourth at the Brown Invitational in a time of 3:54.62. The Bears earned four points for the result and would go on to win the meet. Venable also took 11th in the 400 in 59.71.

Janelle Coulter, Long Beach State junior [Aptos]: Placed sixth in the high jump at the Big West Challenge with a height of 5 feet, 4 inches.

24 Apr 12 connections try change to get job Dunn

The geldings connections took dramatic action to get back on track in The Galaxy by replacing regular jockey Ben Melham with Dwayne Dunn.

Dunn also must shake a monkey off his own back, after recent near misses in the Randwick Guineas (Said Com), George Ryder Stakes (Rekindled Interest), Sires Produce Stakes (All Too Hard) and Australian Derby (Polish Knight).

In three of those four races, Dunn was beaten by a nose.

Like many trainers, Jason Warren was looking anxiously at the weather radar yesterday.

I just hope the meeting goes ahead, he said. Im sure it will, but the track will be pretty heavy, youd imagine.

Bel Sprinter has not won on anything worse than dead ground, but has a mudders pedigree and an economical action, Warren said.

24 Apr 12 Hold: Auto makers still test driving broadband connections in cars

Eddie Hold

Cars and phones are usually a bad combination; I should know having just spent four hours avoiding half-crazed weekend drivers who seemed far more intent on their calls than on the road (or cars) ahead. So any discussion of cars and data connections is certain to raise the hackles of certain government bodies (such as the National Transit Safety Board) and not without some good reason.

Its an opportunity that the carriers–and car manufacturers–keep returning to as another core location where people (not necessarily the driver) will want to connect. After all, we connect at home, at work and while walking down the street; of course we want to connect in the car too. And, of course, we do. The smartphone is quickly superseding the portable navigation devices and streaming music is quickly becoming a popular alternative to the car radio and CD player.

But presently, the connectivity is primarily limited to the smartphone: the car itself–with a few exceptions–remains a barren wasteland of connectivity. And not for want of trying: The road is littered with failed attempts to bring connectivity to the car, such as the much-vaunted Wingcast venture formed by Qualcomm and Ford all the way back in 2000. This initiative, like many others, failed because the consumer desire–and need–for a broadband pipe to the car didnt equate into dollars. Recall too that in 2000 no one had a smartphone and the need for a data connection was not something that consumers could wrap their heads around.

More importantly, there was simply no point to the connection back then, but now the market has transformed. As mentioned, the smartphone has transformed many content sources, including music (streaming), navigation and video. In car entertainment used to involve a DVD player: now it could (with a good connection) include Netflix, HBO GO, or YouTube.

Picking the Pipe

That broadband will come to the car is a moot point: the car already has broadband every time your smartphone is available for synching. The trickier question is how broadband will be delivered to the car: should it continue to be smartphone centric, or should the car have its very own connection? Neither solution is optimal currently: having a connection dedicated to the car is possible, but then you are paying a monthly data fee specifically fro the in-car use. Conversely, using your smartphone typically limits the types of connection you can offer (especially with data caps) and remains primarily a smartphone-centered solution.

Both option have potential, and are being further developed. Take, for example, Cadillac, which is showing off a new, connected interface for its cars. The connection supports streaming music, web searches to improve navigation (and to search for phone numbers, etc.). Such a solution is inherently fixed in design and is based around a broadband connection. And, if you can afford the car, you can afford the connection.

Indeed, the connection fee could be included in the price of the car. OnStar comes free for a certain period of time for new car owners, as does satellite radio. Further, the broadband connection could be priced based on the types of content that one uses it for, with a base service included for free, and streaming music being an optional fee, for example. In many respects, the old Kindle model is applicable, where the consumer never knowingly paid for the cellular connection, even though they used it.

The key to the success of the integrated solution (apart from a reasonable pricing model) is the level of integration into the car and related telematics. Such a solution needs to be seamless: music should sync from the cloud, or the home; video should be easily accessible, and even gaming should be possible (all for the passengers, not for the driver of course). For the driver, improved traffic updates are a must-have if also somewhat of a cliched solution.

The Smartphone as the Hub

The alternative is to continue using the smartphone as the center of the world. The only problem with this solution is that the screen is not ideal and the controls are borderline dangerous while navigating the Long Island Expressway on a Sunday (you all know who you were!). This is where solutions such as MirrorLink, a consortium of handset and car manufacturers, comes in. The premise behind MirrorLink is to connect the phone more cohesively to the car systems. Rather than just offering Bluetooth integration for voice services, the solution would provide a larger screen for the smartphone, as well as integrated control of the device through the car controls. This would mean that the smartphones navigation option would become the cars navigation, using the big screen of the car to provide a more suitable solution. Combine this with a touch screen in the car and its all pretty appealing (as long as you dont forget your phone).

Such a solution would provide a strong solution for the majority of people who do not need a Cadillac solution such as the Cadillac product. Quite when these products will hit the market is as yet uncertain: theres one after-market car system and very little handset support available right now. So in the interim, we need to use the easier–albeit more primitive solution, combining the use of tablets with a mobile hotspot. The benefit being that you can use the mobile hotspot outside the car too.

Of course, as I try to explain to my constantly-connected kids, looking through the windows and watching the world go by has its own attractions (I lose that argument).

21 Apr 12 Exploring Philadelphia’s Titanic connections

ONE HUNDRED years ago Sunday, the “unsinkable” oceanliner Titanic made headlines when it struck an iceberg and sank, carrying more than 1,500 passengers to their deaths. Philadelphia connections among the victims and survivors will be explored this weekend in an exhibit at Independence Seaport Museum.

The main focus is the Thayer family, which donated many artifacts to the exhibit relating to family members who were passengers on the doomed ship. The Thayers were part of upper-class Philadelphian society. John B. Thayer Jr. was a first-class cricketer and Pennsylvania Railroad vice president. Thayer died, but his wife, Marian, made it onto a lifeboat and survived. Their son, John B. “Jack” Thayer III, dove into the water as the ship went down and clung to an overturned lifeboat. Jack, 17 at the time, wrote one of the most accurate accounts of the disaster and helped Robert Ballard find the shipwreck more than 70 years later.

19 Apr 12 Woman impregnated at Motorhead concert seeks father on Craigslist

If youre a dude with a red Mohawk who recently got lucky at a Motörhead/Megadeth concert in the bathroom at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago – or if you know a dude who matches such a description – you totally need to keep checking the Missed Connections section on Craigslist. The woman with whom you had an encounter has something that was left behind.

Did we hook up at the Megadeth/Motorhead concert? – w4m – 28 (Aragon Ballroom), reads the anonymous post that was live through Thursday:

Me: Blue hair, silver tube top, fishnets, Knee high black biker boots.

You: Red mohawk, black pentagram gauges, viper piercings.

The poster then goes on to describe in detail the passionate encounter – the NSFW reproduction you can find here via the Fuse website, which initially spotted the post. Suffice it to say, the couple did not qualify to post their encounter on the Where Did You Wear It? – Planned Parenthoods Foursquare-of-condom-use website. So …

Anyway Im pregnant. Its yours. contact me if you want to be part of your childs life.

Rather than judging this young woman –  and you know you are, jerk –  lets help her out. Consider the near impossible odds of the Craigslist Missed Connections for reconnecting with any random encounter.

Take you, for example. The hottie you stared at a little too long at Starbucks this morning is not looking for you. Of that you can be 99. 9 percent sure.

Whats more, according to those same statistics I totally made up just now, if he or she is posting about you on Craigslist — the creep who stared at him or her a little too long at Starbucks this morning — its not in your citys Missed Connections section. The hottie is doing it somewhere in the community or discussion forums in a post tagged FML, the NSFW  acronym used by texting teens with obtuse parents and Craigslisters bemoaning their unfornatuate — or in your case, creepy — life circumstances in the community and forums sections of the online classifieds site.

If we take blue hair/silver tube top at her word – because of course, nobody ever lies on Craigslist– she isnt a creepy stalker, but a future mom looking out for her impending child. Like everyone else these days, shes using social media of a sort to get things done. So spread the world so she never has to have this discussion with her young head banger: Its not that your daddy didnt have a Facebook account, I just dont know his name …
